Our President

Michael Julian trained under his father and company founder, Ron Julian, joining the family business early and developing expertise in a variety of investigative fields. He majored in Administration of Justice, earning membership in the Phi Theta Kappa International Scholastic Order for academic achievement.

Michael began working full-time for NBI in 1990, specializing in surveillance. He completed the California Department of Justice reserve law enforcement academy and further developed his investigative skills through advanced surveillance training with the National Association of Investigative Specialists.

Since 1995, Michael has been an active leader in the California Association of Licensed Investigators (CALI)—regularly teaching continuing education, serving on multiple boards and committees, and elected as CALI President (2012–2013). He is one of fewer than 150 Certified Professional Investigators (CPI) in California.

His professional involvement also includes membership in the National Council of Investigation and Security Services, World Association of Detectives, and the Southern California Fraud Investigators Association.

To address rising demand for executive and facility security, Michael founded MINDERS Protective Services in 2003—rebranded as MPS Security in 2010—delivering protection to high-profile clients including Martin Sheen, Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, and others.

Our Founder

Ron Julian began his public safety career in law enforcement at age 21, then opened the first National Business Investigations (NBI) office in Fullerton, CA in 1967. Through Ron's vision and dedication, the firm established a reputation serving corporations, municipalities, and high-net-worth individuals across California. Mr. Julian was deeply committed to protecting the rights of others and was recognized as a leader in the investigative community. He passed away on November 10, 1997, at the age of 57, leaving a remarkable legacy of service and ethical leadership.

Our Evolution

Founded in 1967 by former law enforcement officer Ron Julian, National Business Investigations began operations in Fullerton, California. In 1999, the firm incorporated as National Business Investigations, Inc., supporting its growth and modernization.

For over four decades, NBI has provided trusted insurance-related investigative services—including workers' compensation, general liability, disability, and subrogation investigations. Our defense support teams serve a diverse array of clients: municipalities, self-insured groups, TPAs, school and hospital districts, public utilities, manufacturers, and private industry.

NBI's expertise in insurance defense and subrogation has saved clients hundreds of millions over the company's history.
